Overcoming Your Fears: Starting a GLP-1 Weight Loss Journey
Updated: Sep 7
You’ve read about GLP-1s. You’ve seen the transformations. Maybe you’ve even found yourself wondering what your own results could look like.
But then come the questions:
What if the side effects are terrible?
What if it doesn’t work for me?
Will I have to take it forever?
What if I lose the weight and gain it all back?
Am I taking the “easy way out”?
If you’re considering a GLP-1 but feel nervous about actually starting, you’re certainly not the only person asking these questions.
Starting any prescription medication is a medical decision. Having concerns before beginning treatment is completely reasonable. The goal shouldn’t be to convince yourself to take a GLP-1. It should be to understand the benefits, risks, limitations, and support available so you can make an informed decision with a healthcare provider.
Scared to start GLP-1? Let’s talk about 10 of the biggest fears people have before starting a GLP-1.
1. “What if the side effects are terrible?”
This may be one of the biggest reasons people hesitate to start a GLP-1.
You’ve probably heard about nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach discomfort. These gastrointestinal symptoms are among the common side effects associated with medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide.
But experiencing side effects isn’t guaranteed. The severity can vary significantly from person to person.
GLP-1 medications are generally started at a lower dose and increased gradually according to the medication’s dosing schedule. This titration process is partly intended to help the body adjust and improve tolerability.
If you do experience side effects, your healthcare provider can help determine what’s appropriate based on your symptoms and treatment.
The takeaway: You shouldn’t have to navigate side effects alone. Medical supervision is an important part of GLP-1 treatment.
2. “What if GLP-1 doesn’t work for me?”
It’s easy to see dramatic GLP-1 before-and-after transformations online and assume everyone experiences the same results. They don’t.
Clinical trials have shown significant average weight loss with medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, but an average is just that – an average.
Your results may depend on your starting point, medication, dose, length of treatment, nutrition, physical activity, medical history, and individual response. Progress isn’t always linear. You may have months where your weight changes significantly and others where very little seems to happen.
The takeaway: Your GLP-1 journey should be measured against your own progress – not someone else’s before-and-after. That’s one reason our Weight Loss Program includes ongoing progress tracking and access to our AI Weight Loss Simulator, helping you visualize and follow changes beyond a single number on the scale.
3. “What if I have to take GLP-1 forever?”
This question comes up constantly.
GLP-1 medications used for chronic weight management may be prescribed as long-term treatments for some people. But that doesn’t mean every person who starts one will necessarily follow exactly the same treatment timeline.
Your provider may consider your response to treatment, side effects, health, weight-maintenance needs, personal goals, and other factors when discussing how long treatment should continue.
It’s also important to understand that stopping treatment can lead to weight regain for some people. So, rather than asking: “Will I have to take this forever?” it can be more useful to ask: “What would my long-term weight-management plan look like?”
4. “What if I gain all the weight back?”
This fear has some basis in reality.
Research has shown that weight regain can occur after GLP-1 treatment is discontinued. In an extension of the STEP 1 semaglutide trial, participants regained approximately two-thirds of their prior weight loss within one year of stopping treatment.
That doesn’t mean every person will regain the same amount. It does mean that reaching your goal weight shouldn’t be viewed as the end of your weight-management journey.
Nutrition, physical activity, muscle preservation, behavioral habits, ongoing medical care, and an appropriate maintenance strategy can all become important parts of the conversation.
The takeaway: Don’t just plan for losing the weight. Think about how you’ll manage your weight afterward, too.
5. “Does taking a GLP-1 mean I failed to lose weight on my own?”
This can be one of the most emotional barriers to starting.
Maybe you’ve spent years thinking:
I just need more discipline.
I need to eat better.
I need to exercise more.
I should be able to do this myself.
But weight regulation is complex. Appetite, genetics, metabolic factors, medications, health conditions, environment, sleep, and many other factors can influence body weight. Using medical treatment when medically appropriate doesn’t erase the work you put into nutrition, movement, or healthier habits. In fact, those behaviors remain important while taking a GLP-1.
The takeaway: GLP-1 treatment isn’t a replacement for taking care of yourself. For eligible patients, it can be one tool within a broader weight-management strategy.
6. “What if I can’t enjoy food anymore?”
You may have heard people describe losing their appetite or experiencing less “food noise” while taking GLP-1s. And that can lead to another concern: Will food stop being enjoyable?
GLP-1s can affect appetite and feelings of fullness, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll never enjoy a restaurant, birthday dinner, vacation meal, or favorite food again. Instead, some people find that their portion sizes or hunger cues change.
This can also create an opportunity to rethink how you eat – focusing on nutrition, adequate protein, hydration, and foods that help you feel good throughout treatment.
The takeaway: The goal isn’t to stop eating or stop enjoying food. It’s to support a healthier relationship with hunger, fullness, nutrition, and your overall weight-management goals.
7. “What if I lose muscle instead of fat?”
This is an important concern.
When people lose a meaningful amount of weight – whether through medication, diet, surgery, or another method – some of that weight can come from lean mass as well as body fat.
That’s why the goal shouldn’t simply be: Make the number on the scale as small as possible.
Nutrition, adequate protein, and resistance training may be important parts of supporting lean mass during weight loss, depending on your individual needs and medical circumstances.
This is also why looking beyond the scale matters. Through our Weight Loss Program, progress tracking can help you think about your journey more holistically rather than defining success by weight alone.
8. “What if I’m not ‘overweight enough’ for a GLP-1?”
You don’t have to figure this out yourself.
Prescription weight-management medications have specific indications. Eligibility can depend on factors including BMI and weight-related health conditions. But eligibility also isn’t something you should determine based on what someone on TikTok looks like – or what medication your friend was prescribed.
Your first step can simply be finding out whether treatment may be appropriate for you.
Our Weight Loss Program begins with an assessment of your health history and goals. If eligible, you can meet virtually with a licensed provider who can discuss your options and determine whether treatment is medically appropriate.
Taking the assessment doesn’t mean committing to medication. It simply gives you more information.
9. “What will people think if they know I’m taking a GLP-1?”
GLP-1s have attracted an enormous amount of attention – and unfortunately, plenty of judgment too.
Some people still characterize weight-loss medication as “cheating” or assume anyone taking a GLP-1 is looking for a shortcut. But your healthcare decisions don’t need to be based on somebody else’s opinion. You also don't owe everyone an explanation of your medical treatment.
The decision to use a prescription medication should be made between you and your healthcare provider based on your health – not social-media commentary.
The takeaway: Your weight-loss journey is yours.
10. “What if I’m just not ready?”
Then you don’t have to start today.
There’s an important difference between learning about GLP-1s and committing to GLP-1 treatment. You can ask questions, research your options, find out whether you may be eligible, speak with a healthcare provider, and then decide what feels right for you.
If fear is the main thing stopping you, getting reliable answers may be a much better next step than trying to force yourself into a decision.
You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out Before You Start

Doctor-led virtual care
Personalized treatment recommendations
Prescription weight-loss treatment when medically appropriate
