Managing expectations: Aligning expectations in aesthetic treatments

Celebrity lips

In the age of Instagram, filters, and AI - an increasing number of patients come to their aesthetic treatment with a specific expectation in mind - I want to get lip fillers so I can have lips like (insert celebrity here) that are usually misaligned with what the aesthetic treatment can guarantee.

Important point: If a practitioner promises to give you lips like Kylie Jenner, get a second (and third) opinion because when it comes to aesthetic treatments, there’s no such thing as cookie-cutter results.

Fortunately, there are steps both aesthetic providers and patients can take to align those expectations and achieve the best results possible.

Aligning expectations in aesthetic treatments

Realistic results

One of the most important steps in your aesthetic treatment journey is the consultation with your potential injector. During this consultation, you will discuss with the practitioner what you want and what look you hope to achieve. This will allow the practitioner to advise you on recommended treatment options and establish an idea of what kind of results can be achieved.

But, hold on - how do you know what aesthetic treatments you want to undergo? How do you know what these aesthetic treatments will look like on your face?

We have one more tip for aligning expectations when it comes to aesthetic treatments. This AI facial simulator allows you to try out different treatments on your face (without any injections needed) and visualize what you’ll look like post-treatment.  The facial simulator serves as a crucial tool to align your expectations, allowing you to discern the potential outcomes of non-surgical aesthetic treatments before your consultation with your aesthetic provider.

Consultation questions

It is recommended that patients consult with at least 2 different practitioners before moving ahead with any cosmetic procedure. And, many patients find that they end up going with the practitioner that makes them feel the most comfortable asking questions and provides them with all the information they need.

Some of the key questions you should ask during the consultation:

  1. Is this aesthetic treatment the safest way to achieve my desired look?

  2. How often do you perform this procedure?

  3. How long can I expect the recovery and results to last?

  4. What should I expect for the aftercare?

Misconceptions

Patient misconceptions can easily lead to misaligned expectations, so let's set something's straight:

Common misconceptions

  • Aesthetic treatments are non-surgical treatments with surgical results but at a lower cost: One of the major benefits of non-surgical aesthetic treatments is that you can achieve a desired look without needing surgery. However, while aesthetic treatments are cheaper (compared to surgical procedures), there's a limit to what non-surgical treatments can achieve. Patients can expect a refreshed, plumper look, not a complete facial reconstruction.

  • Results are permanent: Non-surgical aesthetic treatments usually last a few months, and, to maintain desired results, patients have to get regular touchups. More importantly, aesthetic treatments do not halt the aging process.

  • Non-surgical aesthetic treatments come with no risks: It's true that non-surgical aesthetic treatments are generally safer, but there are still risks to be aware of, such as burns, blisters, allergic reactions, swelling, and bruising. Your aesthetic provider must review the risks during the consultation and before undergoing the aesthetic treatment.

  • Instant results: Many patients believe that because bandages aren't covering the injection site, they should see immediate results. However, while some treatments offer noticeable improvements shortly after the procedure, full results often take time to develop and may require multiple sessions.

It is crucial to ask your aesthetic provider every and any question you may have to reduce misconceptions and set realistic expectations.

At the end of the day, qualified practitioners’ main aim is to help patients achieve their ideal aesthetic. By coming in with realistic expectations, aligning those expectations with your chosen provider, and having an open discussion about those expectations - you have the greatest chance of achieving the best results.
